International Breast Cancer Day
Breast Cancer Awareness in October
In this month of October, cancer awareness is raised, and it is important to mention Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when breast cells begin to grow out of control. These cancerous cells typically form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a mass or lump. While breast cancer occurs almost exclusively in women, it is important to note that men can also develop breast cancer.
It is also essential to understand that most breast lumps are benign and not cancerous (malignant). Noncancerous (benign) breast tumors are abnormal growths, but they do not spread outside the breast. These tumors are not life-threatening, although some types of benign lumps can increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer.
Any lump or change in the breast should be examined by a health care professional to determine if it is benign or malignant (cancer), and if it could affect your future risk of cancer.
October 19: International Breast Cancer Day
October 19 is celebrated as International Breast Cancer Day to raise awareness among women worldwide about the importance of having regular breast exams to detect any signs or abnormalities early on.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in the female population worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), this disease represents 16% of all cancers in female patients.
Furthermore, it is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, making regular breast evaluations vitally important.
It has been determined that early detection of breast cancer significantly improves the prognosis of the disease, increasing the chances of cure by up to 100%.
How Can We Prevent Breast Cancer?
Here are some general recommendations for preventing breast cancer:
- Annual medical check-up with a gynecologist.
- Perform regular breast self-examinations. If you detect any lump or abnormality, visit your doctor immediately.
- Maintain a healthy and balanced diet.
- Engage in regular physical activity or exercise.
- Avoid tobacco and alcohol consumption.
Let’s take care of our bodies and our health, because you are important.
